In recent years, Tanzania has been undergoing significant changes to its education system, driven by efforts to restructure and improve learning outcomes. These adjustments, often implemented within a year or over a few years, are based on decisions made by the Ministry of Education. These decisions directly impact our school, particularly in terms of the learning materials students require to succeed.
The Need for New Textbooks
One example of the recent changes is that students currently in grade four will now complete their primary education in grade six by the year 2027, instead of grade seven as was previously the case. Such reforms have increased the demand for updated textbooks across all grades to meet the new curriculum requirements.
Each student needs a new textbook in each of the following seven subjects:
- Mathematics
- English
- Kiswahili
- Sports and Art
- History of Tanzania
- Science
- Geography
Number of textbooks required per grade:
- Grade One: 60 students × 7 subjects = 420 textbooks
- Grade Two: 60 students × 7 subjects = 420 textbooks
- Grade Three: 70 students × 7 subjects = 490 textbooks
- Grade Four: 80 students × 7 subjects = 560 textbooks
- Grade Five: 50 textbooks required (7 subjects)
- Grade Six: 50 textbooks required (7 subjects)
- Plus 4 Oxford dictionaries
Total textbooks required: 1,990
Total cost: 19,000,000 TZS (approx. $8,017 USD)
